History of the museum

The Museum Route with its “Waters, flowers, fruits and edible plants tour” is an initiative of the Municipality of Lubriano . The town decided to buy and restore an old house that was in ruins and restore it as Research Centre. The Museum Route was conceived as a way to highlight the importance of the natural resources of the area and to support scientific research projects in the fields  of botany, fauna and hydrobiology.

The Museum Route lies within the territory between the townof Lubriano and a river called Fosso di Lubriano, in the valley infront of the famous village of Civita di Bagnoregio .The whole area, well-known as the Valledei Calanchi (Valley of the Gullies), is fascinating and extremelyinteresting from the point of view of its unusual landscape.

From the geo-morphological point of view, the territory of Lubriano can be considered very fragile, because the land has been subject to disruption by hydrogeological forces of different types and time period, caused by its particular lithostratigraphy (rock layering). All along the southern side of the town, along the left side of the Fosso di Lubriano, there are numerous landslide disruptions. Some landslides are complex and very old, like the one in which signs of the diversion of the Fosso di Lubriano toward Civita di Bagnoregio are still evident. Known as the “corona di frana” (landslide crown), the upper part of this landslide touches the central area of the town of  Lubriano.

The flowers and vegetation of the territory are also influenced by the unusual geographical characteristics of this area.
